Today we’ve been talking about sports movie quotes on Twitter and Facebook and I wanted to keep it going. One of the nominees for our Retro Hall of Fame is NHL 94. This video game (or a later version of it) is played in two of pop culture’s greatest movies ever: Swingers and Mallrats. The question I’d pose is which movie’s NHL video game scene is better?

Mallrats:
There isn’t an option out there to embed the Mallrats NHL video game scene so I’ll have to link to it.
Final Verdict:
This is a tough call as both come really strong in the motha f’n paint…err….crease but my vote goes for Swingers.
Mallrats gets points for referencing the Hartford Whalers. Mad props for the throwback love there. Swingers gets major points for showing a ton of in game action. Trent shows us that his goal isn’t BS thanks to the game having instant replay and he also makes Little Wayne’s head bleed.
The deciding factor is that Swingers has multiple quotable lines from their infamous NHL video game scene: “I’m going to make Wayne Gretzky’s head bleed for Superfan number 99 over here”, “It’s not me as much as it is Roenick, he’s good”, “I took the Kings to the Cup…against the computer with the offsides off…they are a finess team…they are a bitch team”. Mallrats, on the other hand, only has one giant quote: “Breakfast, shmreakfast. Look at the score, for God sake. I’m only in the middle of the second and I’m up 12 to 2. Breakfasts come and go, Rene, now Hartford, “the Whale,” they only beat Vancouver once, maybe twice in a lifetime”.
Either way both movies are amazeballs and are in my top 10 for favorite of all time. Kudos to both for recognizing a very important piece of pop culture and putting it into their movie in a seamless way.
