Draft. Resign. Cut. – Solid Role Players Edition

Doug Christie. Bruce Bowen. Derek Fisher.

We would draft Bruce Bowen, resign Doug Christie, and cut Derek Fisher.

Bruce Bowen has always been known as a defensive stopper. He was a first or second NBA All Defensive team selection eight years in a row. He was deadly from the corners but unfortunately that was about it. He only averaged 6 ppg, 2.8 boards, and 1.2 assists while shooting a Ricky Davis-esque 40.9% from the field. The D is nice but we need someone that can contribute more overall. We are happy to draft him but he’s not worth resigning over Christie.

Doug Christie averaged an impressive 11 ppg, 4 boards, 3.6 dimes, and 1.9 steals for his career. In 97′-98′ with the Sacramento Kings he had a career year as he pulled in 16.5 ppg, 5.2 boards, 3.6 dimes, and 2.4 steals. Not too shabby. He was a first or second NBA All Defensive team selection four times and was in the top 5 in the NBA in steals seven years in a row. Those are some very impressive numbers for a guy that is more known for how crazy his wife is than his production on the floor. We’ll welcome Doug and Jackie Christie with open arms as we resign him to another deal. His combination of scoring and tough D is much appreciated.

Derek Fisher is what you would call a “crafty veteran”. He’s hit some big shots and won a bunch of Championships, but from an individual contribution standpoint he just can’t match up to Bowen or Christie. Both of them played significantly better D and while Fisher scored a bit more than Bowen (8.8 ppg, 2.1 boards, 3.1 assists, 1.1 steals)  it wasn’t enough to make up for Bowen being a lock down defender. See ya Fish, you’ve been sent down to the D-League.
