We’ve all heard the term “walkoff” in reference to a game winning hit in baseball but I bet you’ve never heard it in reference to a basketball jersey…until now. I was at a festival over the weekend when I saw a guy rocking this Brian Scalabrine jersey.
The first thing that came to mind when I saw this was that it was a walkoff jersey. Game. Over. This doesn’t mean that it’s the best jersey ever but it does mean that it’s so awesome that you don’t need to say much about it. The name on the back of the jersey pretty much says it all. Moving forward I encourage you to use this term when you see a fantastic jersey but please try not to abuse it as that will only devalue the term (note that I said fantastic, not average or common). Seeing a Gary Payton Supersonics jersey is not a walkoff but seeing a Jimmy King Nuggets jersey most certainly is.
“The White Mamba” has a cult following with the fans wherever he goes despite the fact that he averages less than 2 ppg and is as nimble as a wheelchair. You are likely to find more Brian Scalabrine highlight videos on Youtube than you will some starter on the Memphis Grizzlies. Here’s a fantastic “best of Brian Scalabrine” video that I thought was pretty funny.
