Yesterday UCLA won the battle of Los Angeles as they handed it to Matt Barkley and former preseason number one USC (let that marinade for a second). Jonathan Franklin sealed the deal with this sweet TD run followed by a throat slash. Gus Johnson caps it all off with a call of “U-C-L-A” as Franklin gives the gesture.

The throat slash is one of my favorite “post play” gestures that a player can do after he does something dope. It’s vicious and signals that your opponent is finished ala Mortal Kombat. The man that is most synonymous and known for dropping throat slashes is the Undertaker. He did it more often than any other person since it signaled his finishing move  so it would be safe to say that he is the gold standard for the move. After seeing Jonathan Franklin’s throat slash I believe that the Undertaker has been mailing it in. Franklin’s is cold, calculated, and deep signaling the end of USC’s chances of winning the game and removing them from their perch that they’ve held atop Los Angeles for years. That extra little effort that he put into the end to make sure that the dagger really dug in is what caps it all off. I give Franklin an A+ for his throat slash and am willing to put it in the same category as Arron Asham’s gesture after his knockout of Jay Beagle.
