16% of Pittsburgh Penguins Fans That Can Read Are Stupid

I was reading the Pittsburgh Post Gazette sports section today when I saw the following poll that made me realize how stupid some sports fans are:

pittsburgh penguins poll

First off, why this is even a question to begin with I have no clue. I believe there is zero merit to this. Next, how 16% of Pittsburgh Penguins fans who can read (which is very important because they are supposed to be the smarter Pittsburgh fans) said that coach Dan Bylsma should be fired is absolutely baffling. Sure the Penguins lost in the first round of the playoffs to their hated rival in very devastating/odd fashion but come on. You can’t be THAT stupid, can you?

Let’s take a look at what we are working with here with Dan Bylsma:

-He won a Stanley Cup in his first season (in 2008-09).
-His team has amassed 100+ points in each of his three full seasons as head coach (for the non-hockey people, hitting 100 points is very good).
-The Penguins amassed 108 points this season which was second in the Eastern Conference and fourth in the NHL.
-The Penguins have a .655 points percentage under Bylsma, which is 4th amongst active NHL Head Coaches.
-He won the Jack Adams Coach of the Year Award just one year ago.

The Penguins were expected to be one of the top contenders to win the Stanley Cup this year but winning a Championship is never easy. The New England Patriots haven’t won a Super Bowl since 2005 and the Detroit Red Wings, the gold standard for the NHL, haven’t won a Stanley Cup since 2008. Not winning a title when you are the favorite sure sucks but it isn’t a reason to get fired. The Flyers had the Penguins number this year and these dumb y’inzers are only looking at a two week stretch of hockey, not what Bylsma has done over his tenure with the club.

Further adding fuel to this fire is that this same 16% of y’inzers are probably Pirates fans too. Need I remind you that the Pirates have 19 consecutive losing seasons, the most in the history of any professional sports franchise. Yes, those same fans think that making the playoffs in each of the last four years and winning a Stanley Cup is not enough. Makes perfect sense.

It’s a shame that in an airport somewhere Greyhound bus station there is a Penguins fan talking to some stranger about how he thinks Dan Bylsma should be fired. This y’inzer/homer/uninformed and irrational sports fan is everything that I can’t stand about a fan base.
