Happy Birthday to one of my favorite players ever, Thunder Dan Majerle. He turns the big 5-0 today.
Thunder Dan Majerle was comparable to fellow white dunker Rex Chapman. At his best, which was in 91′-92′, Majerle gave the Suns 17.3 ppg, 5.9 boards, 3.3 dimes, 1.6 steals, on 47% shooting. For his career he averaged 11.4 ppg, 4.5 boards, and 2.9 dimes. To put that into perspective, Rex Chapman‘s final stat line looked like this: 14.6 ppg, 2.5 boards, and 2.7 dimes.
Thunder Dan was drafted in the first round by the Phoenix Suns out of Central Michigan University. At the time Suns fans weren’t a fan of the pick and promptly booed him. Thunder Dan proved that the majority of fans are idiots as he had a stellar career with the Suns and in 2003 was inducted to the Suns Ring of Honor.
For Hoopsters, rocking a jersey of any team that Thunder Dan was on will get you mad respect. You are most likely to see a Phoenix Suns one since that’s where he spent the majority of his time. However, rocking a Cleveland Cavaliers jersey will take your Hoopsterness to a whole new level. Wearing a one and done jersey is definitely a way to make yourself stand out from the crowd.
Here’s a video of Thunder Dan catching a ground rule double at a Diamondbacks game and giving a fantastic reaction:
And here’s a Dan Majerle highlight video.
You the man Thunder Dan!
