Ah yes, the NBA playoffs are here. Nothing accentuates a title run quite like weeks upon weeks of the most elongated playoff structure in all of sport.
Pessimism aside, I reminisce fondly on the playoffs of yesteryear. A young Michael Jordan dropping 63 on the mighty Boston Celtics. It was a performance so majestic that it left Larry Legend speechless in the post-game presser. The fiery John Starks elevating with the left hand over the always-goggled Horace Grant. Shaq’s infamous alley-oop and double point against Portland (where have you gone, Brian Grant’s dreadlocks?).
Who will etch a lasting memory in our collective minds this time around? Well I know one thing, it won’t be any of these NBA afterthoughts. We’ve already done the fond reminiscing, so let’s take a moment to remember the bad.
Remember when the Lakers brought Hall of Famers Karl Malone and Gary Payton to bring the Larry O’Brien back to LA? Yeah.
Todd MacCulloch played in the NBA Finals. Started in the NBA Finals. (Side note – he’s also a pinball specialist.)
Tyronn Lue. What else is there to say really?
That one time when ‘Grandmama’ Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning went throwing at each other and adorable Jeff Van Gundy stood up for his player by hanging onto Zo’s leg like a yappy pup.
There’s no telling what this year will hold, but I’ll bet we won’t see anything that reminds us of the beauty that was Todd MacCulloch, Vlade Divac, Arvydas Sabonis, Bill Wennington or Mark Madsen (dancing, of course).
